Natural Gas History

In 1955, the original natural gas system for the City of Orangeburg was completed. Later, the decision was made to extend the gas system into the suburban areas and today serves the towns of Cordova and Rowesville. The gas system consists of 323 miles of pipeline, distributing more than 2.3 billion cubic feet of natural gas per year to approximately 10,000 meters.

The natural gas purchased by the Department of Public Utilities comes from Louisiana, Texas, the Gulf of Mexico and LNG Importation Terminal at Elba Island near Savannah, GA.. It travels over approximately 1500 miles of interstate pipeline and is delivered to Orangeburg by Carolina Gas Transmission.

The Gas Division owns and operates a propane-air peak shaving plant. At this facility liquid propane is stored to be used on cold winter nights when natural gas is curtailed or purchases are limited.

The Department of Public Utilities Natural Gas Division offers some of the lowest gas prices of any gas system in South Carolina. We encourage people who are living in areas where natural gas is available but are using propane or electricity to call us for a comparison. We think we can save you money.

The Department of Public Utilities Natural Gas Division is currently comprised of 12 employees. All of our employees take pride in their jobs and strive to help the customers in the most efficient ways possible.
